Repairing Picasa 3 Albums

I keep my photos on a NAS at home, and map that to P:\ under Windows, where Picasa finds them. I recently decided to tell Picasa to find the photos using the full UNC path instead (\\nas1\pix). No problem, Picasa was happy to rebuild its DB of my photos, but all my albums were deleted…gone. Poking around in the file system I was very happy to find that the good folks at Google do back them up before expelling them from the garden. But getting them restored was not so simple.

The short form of this is:

  • I couldn’t figure out how to get Picasa to reference UNC paths in albums. So I switched back to a drive letter mapping. But the albums would only get deleted on startup each time even though the paths were now good.
  • Thanks to this post I learned about the trick of pressing Ctl-Alt-Shift at Picasa startup to get a Confirm dialog before rebuilding the database. Before clicking, I copied in the corrected album files and then started the rebuild. My albums are restored…

Note: The location of the albums and the backups is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Picasa2Albums\…

Good luck out there.
