In trying to find a reliable way to synch my SonyEricsson T610 Phone with Outlook contacts, I discovered just how staggeringly bad their software and support really is. I’m embarassed by the hours I spent finding out, too.

:-(

I have Googled all the forums, pulled the latest downloads, installed to multiple machines, disabled everything else, matched assigned COM ports, ruthlessly explored possibilities, even purchased a USB data cable…but the worst was after 26 minutes on the phone with an ignorant and insulting Ericsson tech support goon — he had the gall to complain that his calls were timed and could I please get off despite the fact that he’d been unable to help me!

In the end, I just used Bluetooth and the IrMC sync service. This works fine, is fast, and avoids the hellhole of getting Serial port mappings to work for the XTNDConnect PC putzware that comes with the phone. Bluetooth has always worked well on this phone, for all the services, but none of the SonyEricsson software has worked with it. I also tried InfraRed and had similar experiences, and with the cable. The drawback to this approach is that it doesn’t allow any filtering of the data you are synching, so at this point I’m using a separate machine with a local copy of the data to synch, which can be copied over from a filtered view. Slight hassle, workable. And the synch is very fast now, a few seconds for a few hundred contacts.

I’ve been using and writing software for PCs for over 20 years and I have standing to speak on this: the software sucks and these people should be held accountable for it.
