I am writing this entry without typing. Several weeks into my Carpal Tunnel experience, typing remains a very difficult undertaking. I have now gone through a variety of user input devices including trackballs, optical mice, tablets and more.

But the great surprise of the past few days has been the amazing quality of the built in speech recognition in Windows XP.

Compared to via voice from IBM it is remarkably accurate within a smaller amount of training. I am using the Andrea headset microphone that came with via voice. It’s a USB unit, and very comfortable. this entry was written with it. Best of all, I am writing this in Mozilla FireFox (The renamed browser from Mozilla), even though that is not a supported application. All right, it does need a bit more training.

But I am truly impressed, and looking forward to making more use of it. It is just one small part of XP, which I am coming to discover has a number of fine improvements to it.
