I’ve been using the Freespeak Bluetooth headset with my Ericsson T610 cell phone for about a day now and I really like it. The ergonomics are wonderful — I forget to take it off my ear when the call’s done, seriously. The sound quality is pretty good, with a bit of low-level static noise at times, which could be due to any number of other radio frequency sources around me. The user guide’s clear, the pairing worked the first time, and the little blue light looks like something out of Star Wars.

The only problem I had was after the first charge (the full 2 hours, light went off) the phone kept making a repeated beeping noise during calls. I called Jabra and after about 10 minutes of being on hold I was told that meant it needed charging and suggested a faulty device since I’d just charged it. I decided to try charging it again, and since then it’s been fine.

I definitely do not miss a wired headset. With voice commands recorded for my most common numbers, I can leave the phone locked and in a pocket and just hit the button over my ear and say a name to call. This has worked pretty well, and if I can figure out how to use the headset to re-record those voices the matches will likely be even better.

My only complaints at this point are:

1. Telling the phone to use the headset takes a few menu clicks — sometimes I seem to be able to do it just by clicking the button on the headset, other times I have to go through the phone.

2. It seems like Bluetooth drains the battery significantly faster — and this phone’s battery goes pretty dang fast as it is. I haven’t tried to measure yet but it definitely uses juice even if you’re not speaking much.

Overall though, a nice experience and one that I expect to make heavy use of.
