If your wife’s black velvet dress got into the wash at the same time that your son’s silly putty was left in a pants pocket, and somehow the two came together in an apparently permanent attraction, and you were wondering if there was any way to get it off…it turns out the answer is WD-40.
After a bit of work on Google I found a few references to this, and amazingly enough it works remarkably well:
1. Scrape off as much of the silly putty as you can. I used a butter knife, to slowly press along the surface of the fabric and pull it up.
2. Spray on WD-40, and rub with a rag. This seems to change the putty a bit and harden it, or at least make it let go of the fibers in the cloth.
3. Scrape gently with the butter knife edge and lift up the putty.
Still trying to figure out how to get out the smell of the WD-40, though.
