Like the dog that it is. I am stunned by the time sink this is, compared to Mozilla Thunderbird. I have been struggling to get to a stable configuration for Outlook 2002 + IMAP to my server. I am not inexperienced at this. I know when a piece of software is a dog, and this one’s a dog. At least the IMAP support.

I have Googled enough that the links that come up are already purple.

I have Windows Updated so much that there’s nothing left to update.

I have spelunked in the registry to no avail.

Outlook 2002 insists on asking for my password every time it wants to connect to my SMTP or IMAP servers. It fails to connect to the servers at startup, and then requires an intricate dance of excruciating dialogs to check the connection settings and jiggle the bits. According to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297115, this was fixed in SP1, but I’m up to SP2 and it’s still not fixed.

I tried deleting the registry keys as instructed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;264672 too, but that hasn’t helped.

At this point, I’m seriously contemplating using Outlook only for its non-mail PIM features so I can sync my iPAQ easily, and keep T-Bird for mail. What a waste of RAM though.

Is Outlook 2003 any better? I can’t believe I’m even asking the question…
