It turns out that spending $59 for McAfee’s Personal Firewall just came in very handy. I don’t know if I’d be infected right now, but knowing that I was being probed was better than not knowing. And for my friend Craig, finding out that his laptop was the source was an even better thing.

We set up together inside the secure corporate LAN. But something was poking at my ports on 139 and 80. I saw the alerts, said “hey, someone’s trying to get in here…” and realized it was his machine’s host
Once he picked up his own copy from mcafee.com, we found out he had the Nachi Worm. The AV vendors have a pretty strong line of business going, since there’s no end to the threat, everyone gets bitten eventually, and you have to ante up annually or get left behind. What a great bite they’re taking.
But I’m glad I’ve got it running…
At least until I finally switch to a Linux desktop.
