This story ends badly, so far. It begins with the phrase “I bought the Linksys wireless G card and hub…” Somewhere in the middle are hours of uninstall/reinstall/pull hairs out.
Turns out there’s some incompatibility with the TI Cardbus chipset in my Thinkpad and Linksys has yet to release a driver that works with it. Not that the Linksys tech folks know this, but if you read the small print on their downloads page you can figure it out. The beta driver mostly just locks up my laptop.
It’s a time sink, of the classic variety that I’ve managed to avoid for some time now by being a bit wiser and researching my purchases. Probably just by avoiding attractive new gadgets, really. But after using a borrowed LinkSys card (802.11b) very happily I figured I’d get one. Sadly, I reached for the faster, newer 802.11g variety, and have been so burned since.
We’re way past the point where I should throw it all away and save my time and money pretending I never gave it another thought.
Except that it’s already lodged in that steel trap problem-solving part of my brain that doesn’t like to let go.
